Experts have
warned email users not to believe a chain letter that is currently
spreading across the internet, claiming that lipstick causes cancer.
The
emails claim that certain brands of lipstick contain a dangerous level of
lead which can cause cancer.
However,
Cancer Research
UK
confirmed that these claims are
untrue, and is has been advised that users delete the email, and not
forward
it onto others, as the email suggests to do.
"Chain
letters like this are too easily forwarded to friends, family and
colleagues without people using their common sense. Stories like this
become urban legends, constantly being repeated without anyone bothering
to check the facts,"
said
Graham Cluley, senior
technology consultant for Sophos. "Hoaxes and chain letters like this are
not harmless - they waste time and bandwidth, and can be a genuine
headache for support departments. Users need to be more skeptical, and ask
themselves whether everything they are told by email can be believed."
An answer to
protect against spam such as this is Armourplate. This blocks spam before
it gets to an organisation's network. ArmourPlate uses several well
respected software suites and its own proprietary technology that detects
