Virus Attacks CNN, ABC and New York Times - 18/08/2005
It has been reported that the MS05-039 Microsoft vulnerability is being exploited by Virus writers.

It is not immediately obvious which worm has caused the infection that has disrupted business at CNN, ABC, and the New York Times, as a number of viruses use the exploit - including W32/Tpbot-A and W32/Dogbot-A, as well as the Zotob, Rbot and Tilebot-F worms.

CNN reports say that the news organization was hit at 5pm on Tuesday in Atlanta and New York. Meanwhile, a spokesperson at the New York Times was reported to say that production of the newspaper had not been affected.

"These type of attacks are becoming a standard part of the virus writers' armoury. If you are responsible for network security inside an organisation it's time to wake up and smell the roses: you need to patch your systems now against these security holes or not be surprised when hackers and worms blast their way through" explains Graham Cluey, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

How Could they have Protected Themselves?

The answer lies with ArmourPlate. Since viruses are usually more prevalent and more damaging to networks than hackers and crackers are, e-mail users should be instructed to be exceedingly careful about the attachments they open, especially those from unknown sources. While this will help with the vast majority of e-mail-borne malicious code, organisations can eliminate the risk of opening infected files completely by ensuring that they have antivirus protection such as ArmourPlate in place.

ArmourPlate stops viruses dead before they even get a chance to reach organization's networks, by using three respected anti-virus software suites and its own proprietary technology that detects and stops new viruses that have not yet been discovered.

In short, ArmourPlate would work alongside your existing systems to safeguard your company's internal network, preventing it from malicious virus and email attacks and clogging with spam, which causes costly downtime. By both in-bound and out-bound scanning, your professional reputation with your staff, clients, partners and peers is protected. ArmourPlate is brought to you with outstanding recommendations and eliminates the need for organizations to worry, creating complete peace of mind.
